How many watts for a decent car sound system?

Hi there, I’m planning on replacing the factory speakers on my car. How many watts are good for some 6×9 speakers? I was looking at some 100 watt rms and 400 peak speakers that looked interesting but I’m not sure if it is enough. Also will I need an amp to run these at a good level? I am not looking for a sound system that will be heard a mile away, I just want something nice that will not be a huge disappointment if I decide to turn it up once in a while.
