I am looking into adding an amp and sub to my car stereo system. I recently purchased alpine speakers for the rear and plan to do so with the front. I most likely will get a 4 channel amp to drive all of the speakers and an 8" or 10" sub. I listen to metal and death metal so I want something that has nice kicky bass and can handle it. I was told by some people that work with audio that a smaller speaker such as an 8" would be better for that kind of music because it has faster response. Is this true? I’m looking at the infinity reference subs on amazon and the 8" and 10" are about the same price. I also am not adding a sub for the whole neighborhood to hear, it is strictly to fill in sound and have nice bass inside my small car.
I’m new to Subs and Amps. I know the new Eclipse’s come with a built in 10" sub. My question is, is an amp needed to have a good car audio system? What exactly is the purpose of the amp and how much does it help with the sound?

Question by Alex B: Would a car audio system sound good without subs and with a amp only?
I don’t big speakers in my car and I want good sound. I’m not looking to show off, more to listen to my music in good quality sound.

If you don’t want to have a large box with subs in your car you still can have an amplifier to power your inside speakers. New component speakers or coaxial speakers are probably what your looking for. There are some new sub woofers for sale that are called slim subs, some of these come with an amplifier encased in the box making a complete package that doesn’t take up to much room, doesn’t draw to much attention to you, and still lets you enjoy your music with just the right amount of bass.
