Trying to buy a nice car audio system, but dont really know what to look for?

I have a 2008 Honda Civic, with the stock audio system. I want to buy a subwoofer and possibly replace the speakers. I really dont know if there is anything else involved with changing car audio systems and speakers and such. Could I just add the subwoofer and keep the stock speakers or would i need to change the speakers too? Thanks for your help.
