What do I need to know before buying a car audio system?

I want to buy a system for my car, preferably JBL since they’re cheap & sound good, but what do I need to know? Oh, also, I only want a subwoofer & amp, I’m happy with my speakers & head unit. I thought I understood amp/sub compaitbility because my friend told me they just need to have the same RMS, but then someone else told me they had to have the same OHMs too & now I’m just confused. What determines compatilibily? And can I really JUST add on another amp & sub to my head unit & speakers without buying new everything? Oh, & lastly, do subs & amp have to be the same brand?
